3 april 2007 - In Europe, sinds begin maart in Groot-Brittannië en Ierland verkrijgbaar, is in de Britse pers opvallend goed ontvangen. Het Britse boekblad Publishing News koos het tot Boek van de Maand, voor de radiozender BBC 4 was In Europe het boek van de week – wat betekende dat er ettelijke malen uit werd voorgelezen.

The Sunday Times wijdde er een hele pagina aan, zo berichtte NRC/Handelsblad. Isabella Thomas betitelde daarin het boek niet als geschiedschrijving in de conventionele zin, en evenmin als reisliteratuur. Het hoorde in haar ogen tot een nieuw genre van ‘geschiedenis van het heden’. "Het is zonder twijfel een spectaculair en prachtig voorbeeld van die vorm van schrijven, al verliest de reis, zo vol fascinerende zijpaden en verrassende invalshoeken, soms aan vaart”, schreef ze. „Zoals Mak begrijpt, hebben mensen verhalen nodig om het onverklaarbare in hun lot te kunnen begrijpen.”

Het conservatieve dagblad The Daily Telegraph wijdde er zelfs twee besprekingen. Noel Malcolm was niet gediend van Maks kritiek op Thatcher en haar beleid, maar hij prees Mak om zijn inzicht dat er niet één Europees volk en één Europese cultuur is.

Zijn collega Michael Moorcock nam Maks waarschuwing dat Europa maar één kans heeft om te slagen serieus. „Dit is een boek dat op het juiste moment uitkomt en niet genegeerd kan worden”, schreef hij.

Eben Harrell van het Amerikaanse weekblad Time vond dat Mak die opmerking niet waar kon maken, maar dat deed in zijn ogen niet af aan de overige kwaliteiten van het ‘In Europa’: ‘Het getuigt van Mak’s warmte en bekwaamheid als schrijver dat hij zelfs in een kroniek van meedogenloze barbarij het portret heeft geschetst van een menselijkheid die het waard is gered te worden.’ ‘Dit boek is geen oproep tot eenheid, maar een roep om vrede,’ schrijft Eben Harrell in Time van 2 april. ‘Het getuigt van Mak’s warmte en bekwaamheid als schrijver dat hij zelfs in een kroniek van meedogenloze barbarij het portret heeft geschetst van een menselijkheid die het waard is gered te worden.’

Sue Baker in Publishing News: ‘When you’re reading to a deadline, a hulking manuscript of over 800 pages is enough to sink the spirits. “This better be good,” you mutter, knees buckling under the weight as you sit down to read, and read, not dreaming that, by the end, you’d wished it twice as long and that, in fact, 800 pages were too few. Geert Mak’s book is a quite brilliant concept … A breathtaking work.’
